Sjuwana Byers hails from one of the south's regional hotbeds for gospel music, The Great State of Alabama. Alabama is home to hundreds if not thousands of regional gospel artists that go from community to community spreading good southern gospel.

For many years of her young life, Sjuwana was part of this kind of culture. Just Havin' Church (their first Rampart Street release) aptly fits the description for having a good ole “camp meeting time,” anywhere the Spirit hits you. It’s just the make-up of the South, even today.

In the early 80's her family moved from the South to the North (Cincinnati, Ohio) for economic reasons. One of the things she missed most in the North was the way they used to have church back home in Alabama. She decided to form her own group, something that would be close to what she was accustomed. In this way, she could transplant the south to the North.

In May 1992 Sjuwana Byers formed Children of God. The group consists of mostly family members. Sjuwana has arranged that everybody in her family either sing or play an instrument. The group signed with internationally acclaimed rampart Street Music label and has made appearances all over the country, even abroad in Italy and Sicily. Their first release JUST HAVIN' CHURCH” topped the charts in Florida, Alabama, Colorado, Tennessee, Ohio, and in the Carolinas. Their second release on Rampart Street Music, ALIVE IN GREENVILLE”, is doing equally well with the regional radio stations and is a big hit in Mississippi, Alabama, and Texas.

Vocally, Children of God features Sjuwana and Mona Darrett (daughter to one of America's Legendary Gospel Quartet Artist, Doc McKenzie). Together they are a powerful unit. The background follows with punchy tight vocals. IT'S REAL CHURCH!

They have become an east coast favorite and are quite popular in their home state. These kids can really sing. Stand back and shout!!

Sjuwana Byers, Mona Darrett, Joylyn Bivin, Nikita Bowden, Kiamesha Black, Anthony Gray and Kenneth Bell are," Children of God".
